Swine flu
Saturday, June 13th, 2009by Marie Amiel A. Gagasa
Early this year, we have been threatened by this strain flu known as A (H1N1) influenza (formerly known as (“Swine Flu”) which is said to have originated from pigs. The outbreak had panicked consumers and restrained them from buying pork thinking they might acquire the virus, which is nothing but a fallacy. According to oregon.gov, you cannot catch swine flu from eating pork or pork products. Eating properly handled and cooked pork products are safe.
Frantically alarmed, the Philippines have made actions to avert the virus from entering the country. The Department of Health did put up thermal scanner stations at airports to detect those which are infected. However, these methods are not enough to block the virus. As of June 11, 77 cases had been confirmed by the Department of Health to surge in the Philippines. Due to this rash, some universities had moved the opening of the classes.
Symptoms of this kind of flu are similar to any kind of flu. it may cause a worsening of underlying chronic medical conditions. When you visit your physician, be sure to mention your recent travel to areas especially if it is known to have the flu.
Here are some pointers you need to see yourself doing after you read this entry:
Ø Cover your nose and mouth, at least with a tissue, when you cough or sneeze. Remember to dispose the used tissue.
Ø Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing and sneezing. Alcohol based sanitizers will also do good. (TIP: Sing “Happy Birthday” twice every time you wash your hands to make sure your hands are clean, without a single flaw…)
Ø And when it’s you that is sick, just stay home. limit your contact from others. this way, spreading of the virus can be prevented.
Ø Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
Remember, there is no known vaccine available right now to protect you from this flu. All that is left to you to keep yourself from acquiring the virus is to be cautious enough and to take a lot of care.
